Starting with local distributors, the company quickly saw success and was soon targeted by national-scale players like Whole Foods. They are even opening a new manufacturing facility in Hawaii to meet the increased demand.

Waiakea Water founder Ryan Emmons is extremely proud of what his company has been able to accomplish in such a short period of time. Noting that company sales have leaped from just a few thousand cases a year to over 120,000 cases.

Starting the company at only age 22, Emmons saw resistance from the industry in which he mentioned, “Everyone in the industry is over the age of 50.” and that, “when you’re new, people won’t give you the time of day.” Emmons stuck to his beliefs focusing on health, sustainability, and charity leading to his business explode with over 4000% growth since starting in 2012.

Just south of the town of Hilo, located on the big island of Hawaii, the water itself is sustainably sourced from one of the purest places on Earth; the active Mauna Loa volcano. Snowmelt and rain pass through 14,000 feet of volcanic rock. This process purifies the naturally alkaline water and packs it with electrolytes and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

Emmons proudly noted that over 500 million liters pure drinking water have been donated to communities in Africa. According to Specialty Food, Waiakea water has partnered with Pump Aid and for every liter they sell they donate 650 liters of clean water to those in need. With charitable contributions making up only one-third of the company’s success, the major factor in their rise has been sustainability.

Waiakea springs itself is completely renewable as the aquifer boasts a 1.4 billion gallon recharge rate. Even the bottling facility uses 33 percent renewable energy. The company is one of the first premium bottled water companies to be certified by CarbonNeutral® and uses only natural environmentally friendly packaging, solely using recycled (rPET) bottles.

Organic Authority reveals exclusively that Waiakea Water’s focus on health, sustainability, and charitable initiatives have changed the game in the premium bottled water industry.
